This article aims at giving an explanation as to what causes hairloss. Over the years, the causes have been revealed and there are now numerous. The different causes differentiate the different types of hair loss. Some of the causes have treatments whilst others don’t.
Hair loss can be inherited. There is a theory that states that hair loss is inherited from the mother rather than the father. Hence, if a mother is affected by hair loss or carries the gene, the child is more likely to experience hair loss. The gene is carried on the X chromosome obtained for females. Females have the XX chromosomes whilst males have the XY chromosome. The gene which causes hair loss is recessive and shows some defects. As long as this defect gene is present in the X chromosomes, the males will experience hair loss. This is the reason for hair loss being more dominant in men. In females, both the chromosomes should have the gene. In this way, fewer women are affected by hair loss.
The presence of some hormones also is a cause of hair loss. In men, there is the hormone dihydro testosterone, popularly abbreviated to DHT. DHT is a result of the transformation of testosterone. When there are high levels of testosterone which are not bound, then these are transformed by an enzyme. This enzyme is found in the scalp and the reaction will take place there. This means there will be DHT in the scalp. This combines with the hair follicles, which have a high sensitivity to the hormone. Hair loss then results.
The presence of insulin at high levels also plays a role in hair loss. It has been noted that there is hair loss at the vertex of the head. There is a sex hormone binding globulin in our bodied. The levels of the globulin seem to be controlled by the levels of insulin. At high levels of insulin, the levels of globulin are at their lowest and there is no further production. When insulin levels are low, the globulin levels are high. The globulin binds with the sex hormones. In men, it binds with testosterone preventing it from being available for transformation. In females, it binds with progesterone and estrogen. These two hormones also cause hair loss. When their levels are high, the hormones affect the function of the pituitary gland. The gland stops producing the hormone responsible for follicle stimulation.
The hair can go into the telogen phase for an extended period of time. This is a phase of the hair cycle in which the hair follicles rest. By this phase the hair would have fully grown. During the phase, some hairs are dropped off by the follicles. This is done in preparation for the beginning of the next cycle. However, the follicles may fail to come out of this phase resulting in hair loss.
