Another day, another couple of hundred scalp hairs down the drain. Slowly but surely you are losing your hair. At first you think maybe no one will notice but that notion quickly goes out the window as the behavior of your friends, family, and coworkers starts to tell a different story. You are not someone who feels comfortable sporting the bald is beautiful hair style and have now lost enough hair where something has to be done before your appearance is changed forever. In this article titled â??Caution Male Pattern Baldness Will Not Reverse Itself Naturallyâ? we will pass on some valuable information that will help you in the quest to reverse this potentially life altering condition.

The first thing you should know is that male pattern baldness will not reverse itself naturally. It is progressive and the sooner steps are taken to halt its march the better your chances will be of restoring your hair to its former glory.

Male pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia) is responsible for nine out of every ten cases of permanent hair loss in men. In advanced stages of this condition the hair is lost in a well defined M pattern. In the early stages a receding hair line, a small balding spot on the crown, and thinning on top are the common signals that androgenetic alopecia is working behind the scenes to send you on a permanent vacation to that barren place where bald is beautiful.

Women do experience pattern baldness as well. In women the androgenetic alopecia is generally described as an overall thinning without the receding hair line so often seen in men. The difference in appearance is attributed to different patterns of enzyme receptors in the scalp.

The cause is an accumulation of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) which is converted when testosterone comes in contact with the hair loss mediating enzyme 5 alpha reductase type 2 deep within the hair cell. Once this conversion occurs, DHT binds to the hair follicle, and over a couple of hair cycles (4 to 8 years) leads to varying degrees of male pattern baldness.

Once androgenetic alopecia becomes noticeable a great deal of follicle damage has already occurred and swift action is need to prevent further damage. This can be achieved in two different ways.

The first is through the use of synthetic drugs formulated to interrupt DHT accumulation or production. The two FDA approved drugs for male pattern baldness are finasteride (oral) and minoxidil (topical). Minoxidil is considered to be pretty much side effect free and is available over the counter whereas finasteride (Propecia) is attainable by prescription only, perhaps due to a number of label warnings and its risks to women.

The second is through implementing natural herbs. The two herbs most often mentioned for male pattern baldness are saw palmetto (FDA approved) and nettle root. Both work in much the same way as finasteride and are generally considered safe with the exception of certain drugs interactions such as blood thinners.

What Else? There are currently a handful of hair re-growth products (specially formulated for both men and women) which have been proven effective both in blocking harmful hormones and bringing the all important dead hair follicles back to life. These specially formulated products can be used both as a preventative tool, starting before hair loss becomes severe, or after male pattern baldness has become noticeable. Whatever the level of balding or thinning you are experiencing these products could be just what is needed to overcome this latest life challenge.
